 When at the beginning of the 1900s all the major armies in the world were introducing the new ammunition, the United States army had also introduced the new .30-03 but still with obsolete concepts, including an ogival-shaped ball, it was necessary to take action by introducing the .30-06 Springfield in 1906. Also called 7.62 × 63mm, it was used until the 1960s and early 1970s, remaining the flagship cartridge of the United States of America for over fifty years before being replaced by the 7.62 × 51mm NATO derived cartridge.
